| The Nunneries of Tawang |

Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh has a long tradition of nunneries called the "Ani Gompas". There are several nunneries located at Tawang. One of the oldest nunnery (Ani Gompa) is the Brama dung- chung Ani Gompa, located 12 kms from Tawang. The Nunnery was commissioned by Karchen Yeshi Gelek in 1595 and houses about 45 nuns.
The Gyangong Ani Gompa is about 5 km from the Tawang Township and has about 50 nuns staying there. Another nunnery is the Singsur Ani Gompa, built by Gonpaste Rimpoche. This is home to 45 nuns and is 28 km from Tawang.

Brama Dung Chung Ani Gompa (nunnery) is the oldest Ani Gompa (Nunnery) in Tawang District of Arunachal Pradesh. This nunnery is located in the slopes of a far off mountain enveloped by the pristine beauty of Mother Nature on all sides.
Located at a distance of 9 km from the main township of Tawang, the Nunnery was established in the year 1595 AD by the Karchen Yeshi Gelek Lama from the Tsang province of Tibet. It is now home for 45 'Anis' or nuns. Being very poor, the inhabitants of Brahma dung chung Ani Gompa depend on alms given by the people for sustaining themselves.

Gyangong Ani Gompa in Tawang Arunachal Pradesh is a beautiful Nunnery, having about 50 Buddhist Nuns. The Nunnery is located on top of a beautiful hillock about 5 km away in the north of Tawang. Founded by Mera Lam Lodre Gyamtso, the Nunnery was subsequently offered by him to his elder sister.
This Ani Gompa is under the control of Tawang Monastery. The Tawang monastery provides for the every day needs of the nuns and their monastery. The Location of nunnery and the customs being followed here by the nuns reminds one of a bygone era, when Buddhism was preached in a calm and serene atmosphere under the shades of a tree.

This Gompa is one of the most beautiful nunneries of Tawang district. It is located at a distance of about 28 km towards the west from the Tawang district Headquarters, on the way to Geshila.
It houses around 30 'Anis' or Nuns. The new Singsur Ani Gompa was built by the previous Rev.Gonpatse Rimpoche in 1960. The old Singsur Ani Gompa also in existence is located amidst the 'Shaa' (huts) of the Anies.

Tawang like the rest of Arunachal Pradesh is yet to be connected with the rest of the country by the Railway. Tezpur in Assam is the nearest railway station. Chopper services have been introduced to enable easier access to the different places in Arunachal Pradesh. The nearest airport is the Tezpur airport and it is well connected with Kolkata and Guwahati.

Arunachal State Transport runs buses to Bomdila on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (8hr). Private buses also ply daily via Bomdila up to Tezpur, departing around noon, these buses arrive at Tawang the next day morning. Jeep services are also available from Tezpur, stationed at about 200mts from the Bus stand.They ply daily from Tezpur early in the morning to the Tawang City Gate.
